Broadband must improve if UK businesses are to prosper outside the EU

According to senior officials at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, as Britain prepares to leave the EU, the future of UK businesses depends upon secure and fast business broadband connections, along with digital skills and the ability to innovate.

The Governments’ Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) initiative is already underway. It aimed to provide superfast broadband coverage to 90% of the UK by early 2016, with access to basic broadband (2Mbps) for all from December 2015, as well as improved mobile coverage in remote areas.

The initiative is looking into how it can provide superfast coverage to remote parts of the UK. It wants SME’s to take-up superfast broadband to support their growth. Businesses need broadband access to connect, share, and grow.

Emerging technologies are currently being tested that provide the speed and capacity required to support the ever-increasing demand. G.fast, a technology that utilises existing copper lines is able to provide much faster speeds than most are used to.

BT has been trialling G.fast since May this year, hoping to deliver speeds of around 300Mbps before a boost up to 500Mbps at a later date. The European Commission set a target of connecting 50 percent of all premises with speeds of 100Mbps or higher by 2020. With that, we may see accelerated deployment of G.fast technology in order to help operators meet targets, particularly in Western Europe.

Moving on from G.fast, the next generation, XG-FAST, currently under development by Bell Labs, broke the previous broadband record with speeds of 10Gbps in tests.
