Demand for FTTP is growing

Fibre optic, compared with ADSL, is an extremely reliable, superfast broadband solution, the fastest, being FTTP.

Ideal for businesses, fibre broadband allows for the operation of multiple devices simultaneously. It is also a scalable solution that provides faster and higher bandwidth connectivity for better internet browsing. This opens up options for using VoIP and hosted services.

The two main types of fibre optic broadband available in the UK are FTTP and FTTC.

FTTP Broadband
Fibre to the Premises (FFTP) uses only fibre optic cables, making it the fastest type of fibre on the market. In fact, reaching speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Avoiding the use of the on-street green cabinet, FTTP, as the name suggests, travels directly from the internet provider to the end-user.

The downside of FTTP, currently, is its availability. But that is changing. As demand for FTTP increases, the Government plans to roll it out to three million homes and businesses by 2020.

FTTC Broadband
FTTC uses fibre optic cables to connect from the telephone exchange to green street boxes (the cabinets) which then carries the broadband connection to your office using copper wires.

FTTC broadband is the most common setup for broadband in the UK. It makes use of existing street cabinets and infrastructure, which negates the need to dig up roads in established areas.

This makes it accessible, as well as a lot cheaper to install than FTTP broadband.

The disadvantage of FTTC is that it uses existing, inefficient copper wire, meaning speeds are far lower than full fibre connections.

Speed comparisons
FTTC is ten times faster than standard broadband with less interference. It can reach speeds of up to 80Mb/s downstream and up to 20Mb/s upstream.

FTTP is even faster, reaching speeds of 330Mb and in some cases even 1Gbps.
